Lines of Resistance is a monumental 75-metre participatory painting created following repeated journeys to Ukraine since the full-scale Russian invasion.

Through portraits, words and personal stories, the work brings together the experiences of people Haines has encountered in Ukraine with the extraordinary response of communities in Gloucester  from aid workers and volunteers to Ukrainian families, artists and ordinary people whose lives have been connected by the war.

But Lines of Resistance is deliberately unfinished.

Visitors are invited to write directly onto the painting, adding messages of friendship, hope, remembrance and solidarity. These messages become a permanent part of the artwork and will travel with it to exhibitions in Ukraine, where Ukrainian audiences will be invited to add their own voices before the painting eventually returns to Britain.

The project is more than an exhibition. It is a continually evolving conversation between communities  using art to preserve individual stories, connect people across borders and demonstrate that Ukraine has not been forgotten.

Gloucester sends a message to Ukraine. Ukraine adds its voice. The artwork carries both home.
